Benjamin Leonard "Dex" Poindexter, also known as Bullseye, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Kingpin) of Season 3 of the Netflix Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series Daredevil, and one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Muse) of Season 1 of its Disney+ sequel series Daredevil: Born Again.
He is a deeply disturbed and sadistic FBI agent who has enjoyed killing since his early life. Eventually, Bullseye is manipulated by Wilson Fisk/Kingpin into becoming his right-hand man and also an impostor Daredevil in order to incriminate the real one.
He is portrayed by Wilson Bethel.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- Bullseye is a deranged and psychopathic/sociopathic individual who is callous and sadistic at the same time, highly inclined to commit homicide and/or harm other people to satisfy his urges or vent over his emotions.
- While he was initially slightly affable to his allies in the third season of Daredevil, he appears to have subverted this redeeming quality by the time of Daredevil: Born Again as he’s shown to be a shameless sadist by that time.
- Despite the MCU's astronomically high Heinous Standards, Dex still stands out due to achieving a high kill count despite his low level of resources compared to Fisk and lack of superpowers.
Background[]
- As a child, he murdered his baseball coach with a baseball out of spite when his coach had told him to step down from the pitching plate to give other kids a chance to play.
- When talking with his therapist Eileen Mercer, he admitted to killing little animals just out of sheer sadism.
- While working at a Suicide Hotline, he told a person suffering from depression because of their abusive stepfather to kill their stepfather instead of killing themselves.
- Because of this, it can be said that he did this to many other people who ended getting Dex after calling the suicide hotline. However, this is minor because this is never shown and has no impact on the story.
Daredevil[]
- When 2 members of New York's Albanian Syndicate surrendered following a failed attempt on Wilson Fisk's life, Dex proceeded to kill both of them with no hesitation
- Stalked a girl he worked with at Suicide Hotline named Julie.
- Disguises as Daredevil with a Daredevil suit that Fisk gave him and kills multiple people with that suit, in an attempt to incriminate Matt Murdock/Daredevil.
- At the New York Bulletin, he kills over 5 people in order to protect Fisk and his reputation.
- When Daredevil and Nadeem had invaded his home, Dex tried to shoot and kill them.
- At a meeting full of crime bosses, Dex ruthlessly kills a crime boss named Starr when he disagrees to Wilson Fisk's demands.
- Under Fisk's orders, Dex went to Clinton Church with the intent to kill Karen Page.
- Killed Father Lantom by throwing a sharb object, albeit by accident as he was directly aiming for Karen Page.
- After fleeing the church, he kills two innocent men who walk in on him dressed as Daredevil with his mask off.
- After overcoming him in a fight, he attempted to kill Matt Murdock.
- Killed Esther, the person who had Fisk's favorite painting when she refused to give it to him. It can be noted that Fisk didn't order him to do this.
- Killed Ray Nadeem under Fisk's orders despite knowing that he had a wife and child.
- When Agent Hattley showed remorse for her actions, Dex told her to simply suck it up.
- Attempted to kill Wilson Fisk and his wife Vanessa during their wedding. Although one may say Fisk deserved it, Vanessa never did anything particularly bad to deserve it.
- Goes on a rampage at Fisk's wedding, killing several FBI agents.
Daredevil: Born Again[]
- Hunts down a client of Foggy Nelson's, Benny, in order to force him to tell him where Foggy is.
- He goes on a massacre at Josie's Bar, killing 11 people.
- Snipes Foggy Nelson in the back, killing him.
- Shoots two cops in their heads who came out of the bar to help Karen and Foggy.
- Attempted to shoot Karen Page, before being saved by Daredevil.
- Threw a knife at bar patron's head, killing her.
- Threw a billiard ball directly at another parton's face, killing her.
- Kills a couple who was living in an apartment above Josie's Bar.
- When Daredevil hysterically asked why he killed them, Bullseye just laughs at him and pats him on the shoulder, showing he killed them out of sadistic reasons. This was the last straw for Daredevil as he was forced to break his no-kill rule and threw him off the roof of Josie's Bar. Even though he survived, Daredevil was mentally broken because of this incident, and gave up being Daredevil and Karen Page moved to San Francisco.
- It was later revealed that he was hired by Vanessa Fisk, Kingpin's wife, to kill Foggy Nelson and to make it look like he was on a homicidal rampage.
- A year after the attack, Dex showed no reaction towards the announcement of his lifetime imprisonment, showing he has no remorse for committing the massacre.
- When Matt Murdock visits him in prison and demands to know who hired him to kill Foggy, he deflects and told him he'd tell him if he got him out of prison. When Matt refuses, he nonchalantly provokes Matt into slamming his head.
- Uses his broken tooth to shoot it a guard's eye and kills him with half a scissors in order to steal his uniform and escape prison. He also uses the other half of a scissors to kill a surgeon who treated him.
- After escaping prison, he attempts to assassinate Wilson and Vanessa Fisk again at their Black and White Ball, but unintentionally shot Matt Murdock when he defended Wilson Fisk.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Despite his heinous actions, he is too tragic to even be Near Pure Evil for several reasons:
- He is implied to have been neglected and/or abused by his parents from a young age, before their death.
- After his parents death, he was never taught clear differences between right and wrong and although he had many people teach him differences, such as his therapist, he never truly understood.
- Everyone he ever loved and cared about also either died or left him and never had a chance for a real family that he could stay with and depend on, which always left him with a sense of emptiness.
- He was somewhat stable and successful before Julie rejected him and the FBI fired him. Although in both cases it could be argued he brought it on himself, it is still played for sympathy as he almost committed suicide as a result.
- He was ruthlessly manipulated by Wilson and Vanessa Fisk who took advantage of his need for other people to define his morality and turned him into their own personal hitman. When he had fully gained Dex’s trust, Wilson murdered Julie, the only person left who could send him down a different path.
- He cares about several people:
- He genuinely cared about his parents and was saddened by their death. This is shown by how as a child, he begged for them to come back. This care is never subverted throughout the show.
- He also genuinely cared about his therapist, Eileen Mercer, viewing her as a parental figure and being saddened and angry when she was dying. He also listened to her voice after her death to use her as a guide to stay sane.
- Cared for Julie. Although one could argue this is nothing more than an obsession, Dex wanted her help to restore his sanity and make her his "North Star." This is shown by how when trying to talk to her again on her jog, he said he would not come any closer than she wanted him to and after she supposedly said she never wanted to talk to him again, he was visibly distraught and had a mental breakdown. After he found out Fisk got Julie killed and framed their conversation in order to manipulate him, Dex turned against Fisk for good.
- He seemed to like Ray Nadeem, as he went to him for solace after the FBI pinned the blame on him, and was reluctant to kill him, only really shooting him when Ray drew his own gun.
- He has a Pet the Dog moment as he spares his former surveillance room partner, Agent Lim, who calls him one of the "good ones."
