You wanna call it rape, call it rape. She wanted me. Me. She was practically begging me to f-ck her. If that's rape, then every girl at this school wants to be raped.
~ Bryce taunting Clay after beating him up, revealing his true depraved nature and disregard for others' lives.
You want to know what really happened with me and Hannah, Mom? She got in the hot tub with me, no suit on, just panties and a bra over those very nice tits. And she looked at me like she was hungry. And yeah, I wanted her. I just... I just had to have her. So I took her, I turned her around, and I f-cked her from behind. Hard. Until she cried. Is that what you want to hear?
~ Bryce confesses to his mother that he raped Hannah.
I’m trying to set things right. I’m trying to be better but this f—king world won’t let me.
~ Bryce expresses his frustrations towards Alex and Jessica for refusing to forgive him for his crimes.

Bryce Walker is the main antagonist of the 2017 Netflix adaptation of its same-name novel, 13 Reasons Why.

He is a part of Hannah Baker's Baker's Dozen and the subject of her twelfth tape from her list of reasons why she committed suicide. Bryce Walker raped Hannah at a party, completely breaking her soul. This event is what led Hannah to go through with her decision to kill herself. His actions against Hannah are the worst of them all as he is responsible for most of the events that have transpired throughout her life. He also tormented many people she cared about.

After the events of Baker's Dozen, he eventually tried to redeem himself, even feeling remorse about and confessed to his crimes of being a rapist to Baker and several others. He still retained some of his cruel mentality and jerkiness, such as destroying his friend, Zach Dempsey, any chance of a successful sports career, and threatening both him and Jessica Davis once Alex Standall decided to help him up. Upon his death, everyone would blame his death on his friend Monty, who had already committed acts heinous enough for him to protect Tyler Down from Monty, which is only for situational reasons.

He would become a hallucination in the fourth season to Clay Jensen, Alex, and Jessica, having traumatized them in previous seasons.

He was portrayed by Justin Prentice in the TV series and was also portrayed by Ronan Carroll as a child.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • While he has many affable moments with the other jocks in school, it comes off as more of a façade on his part as he enjoys the perks of being popular while having other people who can cover up his actions.
  • While having some comedic moments, none of them are detracting and his actions are taken dead seriously both in-universe and narratively.
  • Though lacking the attempted body count of Tyler, the brutality of Monty's rape towards Tyler, and other additional crimes Monty himself has, he easily stands out for having the most rapes out of any character in the show and he has the most influence over the plot, given Hannah's suicide.

Past[]

  • He regularly gives his friends weed or helps them cheat on tests to keep them under his control.
  • He and his jocks regularly lured girls to the clubhouse founded by Coach Rick before intoxicating them, raping them, and taking pictures of it as part of a collection, with him claiming around 7 or 8 victims, some of whom he was dating at the time.
  • He pressured Alex Standall to create the hot/bot list of all girls in the school, indirectly resulting in him losing Jessica.
  • He is the main reason why Hannah committed suicide:
    • He peer pressured Justin about his date with Hannah and then forcibly sent his up-skirt pictures of her around the school, causing another student to view her as a slut due to thinking she had sex on their first date.
    • He had Marcus Cole attempt to have sex with her on a date.
    • He sexually harassed Hannah multiple times.
    • To put the final nail in the coffin, he raped her when she was alone in his hot tub, which was witnessed by Montgomery de la Cruz, who did nothing to stop it; and Alex Standall, who later attempted suicide over it due to guilt.
  • He raped a drunk and semi-conscious Jessica Davis at a party, even goading her boyfriend/his own best friend Justin Foley into letting him do it to her as he locked him out of the room (while Hannah was watching from close by but too afraid to act). This causes Justin great emotional pain when he is stricken with the fact, he let his girlfriend get raped. It also later traumatizes Jessica when she finds out and becomes unable to trust boys for a long time.
  • Even though he has a tragic backstory where he was often lonely during his childhood, it has nothing to do with his actions since he raped people out of perversion and wanting to satisfy his sexual desires, which is not caused by having a tragic backstory.

Season 1[]

  • He assaulted Clay when he accused him of raping Jessica and Hannah, even repeatedly kicking him in the stomach as he is on the ground.
  • He boastfully said to a knocked-down Clay that every girl wants to get raped by him and he did nothing wrong.

Season 2[]

  • He arrogantly told Mr. Porter he was in no position to threaten him when confronted about Hannah's suicide.
  • He raped his girlfriend, Chloe Rice, when she was unconscious at his clubhouse. This accidentally resulted in her becoming pregnant with her being in no position to take care of a child. He is also aware she comes from a broken family and is afraid of losing him.
  • He makes Chloe uncomfortable by continually grabbing her and making out with her during their movie date.
  • When confronted by Justin about his rapes, he insults him by saying he can't do anything to get him in trouble because he is poor and his mother is a junkie, so nobody will listen to him.
  • He manipulated Chloe into not speaking out about his rape and has her lie at trial, despite how traumatized she is. This is seen when she is about to confess the truth at the trial and he gives off a smile when she fearfully says it was consensual instead.
  • He lied to the court that Hannah wanted to have sex with him and he never raped her or dozens of other girls.
  • He got an erection of thinking back to when he forced himself onto Hannah.
  • He threatens Jessica as he is being taken by the police, saying "you're making a big f-cking mistake!"
  • Although he did order Monty to leave Tyler alone after his trial, it was for pragmatic reasons as he was on probation and didn't want to get in any more trouble due to Monty's actions, which gave Monty the idea to beat and rape Tyler for getting baseball season cancelled, which broke the latter so much to the point where he tried to shoot up the school and kill more than 100 people.
  • When his mother confronted him about his rape of Hannah, he bragged about how he needed her and "f-cked" her from behind until she cried, resulting in her slapping him.

Season 3[]

  • He broke into a house (thinking it’s his dad’s house) to vandalize it and threatens (albeit an empty threat) a little boy with a knife when he witnesses it, laughing when he pisses himself out of fear.
  • He gave Alex drugs.
  • In an act of spite, he broke his friend Zach Dempsey's knee after at the homecoming game as revenge for dating his ex-girlfriend, forever ruining his chances at a career in sports.
  • He threatened to retaliate against Zach and accused Jessica of setting him up as Alex was helping him up (though this was likely him lashing out in pain), causing his death at Alex's hands as a result.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • In Season 3, he feels genuine remorse for his rapes and attempts to redeem himself, apologizing to Mrs. Baker and Jessica and breaking down into tears while listening to Hannah's tape, making him an on & off-villain. He even makes an apology tape confessing to his many crimes and gives it to Jessica in an attempt to atone for his past actions.
    • He's also given more sympathy due to this, as well as insecurity as seen in scenes such as him breaking down crying after his dad leaves him (as well as getting emotional when he discovers his secret affair and feeling as if his dad always planned to replace him), getting emotional when Chloe tells him about her abortion with their baby and in moments where he felt as though his mom didn't genuinely love him and didn't appreciate having him as her child.
  • He is genuinely in love with Ani and starts a genuine relationship with her. He even admits to Mr. Porter that he doesn't want to hurt her in their relationship and wants to control himself around because he likes her, even initially warning she shouldn’t be with him because he considers himself a bad person.
  • He is honorable since he genuinely helps pay off Seth for Justin to cover his debt (as well as extra for Seth to leave him alone) and he gives Tony his car back to help him out after the I.C.E. deported his family out of the country.
    • Even before Season Three, he respects Jeff Atkins at his funeral by saying he was one of the best athletes. He showed respect to Clay after their fight (even giving him a drink and towel). He later apologized to Clay for beating him up, admitting he has no beef with him, and called him a good kid. He also defended him and Alex when Monty tried to attack them in the hallway.
  • He genuinely cares and is protective of a few loved ones:
    • His mother Nora, whom he defends from her father's verbal abuse, and bonds with her like having a paint fight with her and going to yoga together.
    • Tyler, despite bullying him once, protected him from Monty in school from bullying and asked if he was okay. He would later sympathize with Tyler even when coming after him with a gun and demanding to know what Monty did to him and threatening to report Monty's crimes to the police should he even look at Tyler again.
    • Even though he barely knew Winston Williams, he defended him when Monty was beating him up, even though he could have easily just left them and got out of there. He even went as far as to give Winston money to keep quiet about the incident.
    • Justin, who despite having a friendship that he initially subverted due to his toxicity and manipulation, ends up wanting to become friends once again and protecting him multiple times, such as paying off Seth Massey to save.
    • Jeff Atkins, who he would honor at his funeral.
  • He is proven to have standards, as he disapproves of his grandfather’s racism.
  • His death is played for sympathy as Alex throws him into the river after he's been seriously beaten and injured by Zach, with both Zach and Alex feeling remorse for the role they played in his death due to him trying to change and feeling as though he didn't deserve to die, with his family and old friends and even his enemies mourning his death.
  • Unlike Monty, who subverts his redeeming qualities and even his tragedy while being inconsistently sympathetic, Bryce in seasons 3 and 4 is consistently humanized with standards, a tragic past, remorse for his past rapes, and several people he genuinely loves.

Trivia[]

  • Only the television version of Bryce Walker qualifies as Inconsistently Heinous, as the novel version doesn't have the additional crimes of the TV version nor does he do enough to establish a pattern of him being a serial rapist, despite lacking the redeeming qualities of his TV version.
  • Initially, Bryce and Monty during the first two seasons were morally scaled as Pure Evil. However, this was retconned during seasons 3 and 4, due to them being written in a more humanized manner, though more so in Bryce's case with Monty counting as Near Pure Evil due to having no redeeming qualities and less sympathetic moments.
