I'm afraid the subject is...unstable. Granted, her capability seems promising, with her unique abilities. However, the repetitive exposure to inmense pain has affected her mental state more than we expected. We expected aphasia or a state of paralysis among the subjects. But we did not expect her to develop such...severly violent tendencies. She is obssesed with pain and violence, like those are the only things that hold meaning to her, regardless of if she is inflicting or recieving. I suspect that the constant pain from the proyect has twisted and deformed the very nature of her being into...something malicious. As mentioned in previous reports, we already had an incident with multiple casualties. And from what I saw, she is a menace in every sense possible. my diamond. I cannot even say with full certainty that she can be classified as a gem anymore.
~ Chrysoberyl describing Black Pearl's visciousness
My Diamond...I need you to know...I need you to understand just how much I suffered for this Empty Dreams of yours. These...Crystal Gems, these mongrels, the sky, the land, the ocean and everything in it, this entire planet that you loved enough to betray me...I will burn it all into a cinder. Maybe then...you will finally come out and talk to me, My Diamond
~ Black Pearl after finding out the truth and Steven and Pearl's attempts to reach out to her, deciding to destroy the Earth
Flee flee, flee towards the light,
flee flee, the shadow is here.
Stench of the blight. Ever drawing near.
Flee flee, run from the dark.
Flee flee, it's prowling in there.
The howl in the murk, screams we can't unhear. She is here, it's here
Black Pearl is here
~ Black Pearl singing the song the rebels wrote about her

Black Pearl is the main protagonist of the fanmade comic Steven Universe: The Story of Black Pearl created by RevolverD. The story features a divergence from the main series after Garnet's wedding where Pink Diamond's original Pearl searches for answers behind her death.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • During Proyect Black she viciously shattered several gems. Her actions left such a negative impact on the scientists that they fully advice Yellow Diamond against using her, stating she can't even be seen as a gem anymore and instead as something malicious.
  • She tricked the Scientists into believing she had a max range when in reality she could kill them at any place in the room
  • When White Diamond sent her Pearl to check on her progress, she mocked her for being nothing more than a brainwashed puppet and tried to kill her
  • She kidnapped Chrysoberyl and psychologically tortured her by constantly threatening her with a painful demise and taunting her by toying with her life and forced her into gathering information about Pink's shattering for her.
  • When the information Chrysoberyl brought her was insatisfactory for her, she attacked her and once again tried to kill her despite the fact she spent centuries gathering as much data as she could.
  • Even though she let the Chrysoberyl live, she threatened her into secrecy and probably left a deep mental scar on her.
  • While operating against rebels, she killed so many that she gained a reputation among the survivors as a beast that can't be called a gem, even having a song written about her. She also left several as lifeless husks instead of shattering them, and Peridot is shown to be openly horrified by just reading the reports about her missions
  • When Yellow Diamond sent her on a mission, she massacred a whole ship of gems and pinned an Agate to the wall, forcing her to watch as she shattered a gem in her hands while also mocking their attempts to hold her off.
  • She tortured Agate in order to gain information on Moonstone and when she refused, Black Pearl forcibly fused with her; an action that is shown to cause extreme physical and mental pain.
    • To make matters even worse, Pearl herself states that Agate won't feel anything anymore, revealing she's straight up deleting her mind.
      • It's also shown that she invaded Agate's mind to extract all the information she needed.
    • Even worse is that Agate had never fused before and Black Pearl also expressed her interest in killing her after she outlived her utility.
    • Black Pearl later reveals that she forced Agate into an Assymetrical Fusion that left her beyond repair and in a slow and painful death as merely a shattered husk of a body.
      • Even worse is that since Agate maintains her physical form instead of being shattered, it's possible she's still somewhat conscious inside her corpse.
      • Black Pearl also takes enjoyment in turning those she fuses with into mere shells of their former selves, stating she's done it several times before.
  • After gaining Moonstone's location, she invaded her rendevous point and tore up the entire pod section which caused the opening doors on the Extraction to suck Citrine into the abyss.
  • She ordered a Homeworld Ship to blow up the Interception ship, killing possibly hundreds of innocent gems.
  • She has shattered so many gems that the Homeworld Captain of her mission ordered her to not kill Moonstone as she refused to bring a pile of shards as a mission result once more, which causes Black Pearl to tell her she's no fun.
    • The Captain also acknowledges that Black Pearl is not loyal to Homeworld and has killed ally gems in the past, admitting that it's better to leave her unchecked rather than risk her soldiers' lives.
  • She defeated Torumaline and tried to have her injured so badly that her screams would alert the whole ship to her presence, being annoyed at her groans and pants and kicking her neck so hard that everyone on board heard her agonizing.
  • She poofed all of Jade and Moon's allies in the most painful ways possible without actually shattering them such as stabbing them from inside out or crushing them against the ground.
  • She used Agate's remains to threaten Jade and Moon, traumatizing them with the sight and openly mocking the fact that she couldn't survive fusing with her.
  • She poofed Jade and used her and the others on board as leverage against Moon in order to force her to come as a willing prisoner and lie to Yellow Diamond (an act that could get her shattered) by telling her the rebels' base is on Earth so she could go there to investigate Pink's death.
    • She also left Moon in custody of Yellow despite promising her she would protect her cause.
  • When Yellow Pearl expressed her doubts about the validity of Moon's claims, she threatened her with forcing her into the same kind of torture she did with the rebels.
  • She left to Earth to investigate Pink's shattering on her own and expressed sadistic glee at the idea of shattering the Crystal Gems.
  • She manipulated Steven by acting as an innocent escaped Pearl and pretended to become friends with him so she could extract all the necessary information by taking advantage of his kind and naive nature.
  • By gaining information on the Crystal Gems' reaction to Lapis and Peridot at first, she manipulated Steven into not telling the Gems about him, telling him how they would hurt her.
  • She sabotaged communication with Homeworld, preventing her allies from contacting the Diamonds for 3 weeks and when confronted about it, she threatened the captain with shattering any Gems she sends down as a show to gain the Crystal Gems' trust.
  • Upon being discovered by Connie, she used her influence on Steven in order to have her keep her existence a secret as well.
  • After seeing Connie wielding Rose's sword she let out a lot of killing intent to threaten her while masking herself under a friendly smile. It's also shown that Connie is very put off by her and uncomfortable when sparring in her presence.
  • While sparring with Connie she considered the idea of mercilessly killing her in the spot, choosing not to only because it would cause Steven to lose trust in her. However, despite this she's shown to have plans to kill Connie later when she's alone and ultimately decides to try to behead her in that moment, stopping her sword mere inches away from her neck because Lion arrived.
  • When Lion attacked her, she would have killed him if not for her undercover image being in risk, pretending to be scared and in trouble so Steven would call Lion off.
  • Her presence caused interferences with Garnet's future vision; she also describes Black Pearl's presence as a terrible anxious feeling of something terrible to come.
  • Upon realizing that Connie had told the Gems about her, she called a drop in from her reinforcements to attack.
  • She positioned a dropship in the north to lure Garnet, Peridot, Amethyst, and Bismuth away from Steven and Pearl.
  • She attacked the Gems that investigated the dropship, mocking them for their small numbers and stranding them (except Garnet) there by destroying the Warp Pad.
  • She fought Garnet on the Warp Stream while insulting her and her components for not living up to her expectations and then throwing her out of the beam, leaving her stuck in space.
  • She lured Steven out of the safety of the Beach House by still pretending to be innocent and using his trust in her to get him close only to reveal the whole truth.
  • She is not loyal to Homeworld or to Yellow Diamond, something she herself admits to Steven by telling him that she has her own agenda.
  • Upon revealing her true nature to Steven, she sadistically smiled while telling him how he had used him and why she was really on Earth, demanding that he tell her what really happened when Pink was shattered and threathening to kill him and extract the information from his head if he refused.
  • When Pearl came out to defend Steven, she challenged her to a fight and began ruthlessly attacking her while also mocking her lack of allies and provoking her to use her sword instead of her spear, engaging in an aggressive sword duel.
  • Upon being bested by Pearl in sword fighting, she began using her. enhancements to lethally attack her
  • She nearly shattered Pearl before Stevonnie stopped her.
  • Upon being offered a chance by Stevonnie she merely mocked their resolve as she sensed Steven's doubts which caused Stevonnie to have inside problems before she ruthlessly attacked them, claiming to not have time for their problems.
  • She pinned Pearl to a wall with her spikes so she wouldn't interfere in her fight with Stevonnie.
  • When Stevonnie refused to tell her the truth, she nearly killed them before Lion showed up, after which she switches the focus of her attacks to him.
  • She savagely beat down Lion and bit his neck before tossing him into a rock, and trying to kill him which she mocks Stevonnie for by pinning it on not telling the truth.
  • After realizing that Rose's sword couldn't actually shatter gems, she becomes even more centered on uncovering the truth.
  • When Pearl breaks free and tries to attack her, she brutally retaliates by slamming her to the ground and stomping her neck.
  • When Connie attacks her again, she begins to choke her, and taunting Steven about how she has "too much leverage" showing she doesn't view her enemies as nothing more than items to be used.
  • She threatens to kill Pearl, Connie and Lion if Steven doesn't tell her the truth.
  • When she realizes Pearl knows the truth, she sadistically laughs and threatens Steven by telling him he'll force the information from Pearl and proudly announcing the fact that she wouldn't survive her extraction process which was shown in the past with Agate to be horrible and agonizing.
    • She also tries to do the same to Connie despite her (to Black Pearl's knowledge) not knowing anything at all
  • When Steven finally caves and tells her the truth, she aggressively knocks Pearl and Connie away and begins choking Steven, dismissing his words as simple and absurd lies.
  • After having a breakdown and accepting the truth about Pink, even after Steven apologized, she ultimately decides that everyone needs to understand the pain she has gone through and sends out a Planetary Call Signal for the Emerald Captain's ship, ordering them to use all their firepower in the continent in order to forcibly awaken the Cluster, which would destroy the entire Earth and kill billions of innocent people.
  • When Pearl tries to reach out to her, asking if she really wants to destroy Pink's planet, she merely states that she will burn down the entire planet because Pink loved it more than her, just so she can get Steven to "talk to her".
  • She had the Emerald Ship fire down on the Crystal Temple and all the Pyrite guards mobilize against the Crystal Gems.
  • When the Captain refused to follow her orders, finally standing up to her and calling her out for her past actions, she tried to shatter her without hesitation by slicing her face, though she missed and knocked her helmet off instead.
  • When the Pyrites turn on her, she begins to sadistically take them out with the intention of shattering them, nearly succeding with one before the Captain stopped her.
  • When she was cornered by the containment unit, she went underground and killed several pyrite guards by stabbing them with her spikes.
  • She allowed herself to be piled under several pyrites and then immobilized them all by stabbing them with their spikes and sadistically cackling while forcibly fusing with all of them much to the horror of everyone present, outright mocking their demises by making fun of how they fell for her trap.
  • Despite having had a genuine tragedy of losing Pink and then being tortured extensively with the Stain through centuries, it does not change the fact that in the present she holds no empathy for the people around her and reduces the stakes of the Homeworld-Earth war to her personal vendetta against Rose Quartz. What's even worse is that after finding out the truth, she shrouds herself in denial and decides to destroy the whole planet which would kill trillions, just so Steven (who she still believes to be Pink) will talk to her "properly", and even beforehand the various instances of her effortlessly destroy rebel gems and torture those who she doesn't immediately shatter, all for her own sick amusement made it clear she has no care for any kind of life except her own and Pink's.
  • Despite the Heinous Standard being set high by the Diamonds, Black Pearl stands out for several reasons:
    • Her lack of resources compared to the Diamonds who are the rulers of all of Homeworld, have countless ships and armies and all the necessary resources to take down Earth, while Pearl is just a pearl, alas a heavily modified and weaponized one, but still just a servant, ranking the lowest out of all Homeworld gems except for Pebbles.
    • Her unique sadism and enjoyment in killing and torturing other gems, while Yellow is the one who had her do it, it's revealed that Yellow never intended for her targets to be shattered or left as the soulless husks that Pearl leaves them as. While Yellow is responsible for most of Pearl's crimes, Pearl is still the one who not only enjoys killing and scarring others, but goes out of her way to make them suffer as much as possible
    • Her decision to kill all of Earth was entirely on her own, as the Diamonds had been completely cut off and are unaware of what's happening. This makes her stand out for attempting mass genocide out of her own choice while also trying to kill every gem on Earth beforehand including the Homeworld soldiers that were once her allies just because they refused to listen to her. While the Diamonds have drained the life of several planets, it's not only offpage, but is also never mentioned at any point of the story, making Pearl stand out as the only one to attempt to kill a whole planet

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She has a genuine tragedy of being unfairly blamed by Yellow Diamond for Pink's apparent death and being forcibly and mercilessly experimented on for centuries, being turned into a volatile and dangerous weapon that isn't even considered a gem by those around her and having been driven to insanity. Not to mention she was also tortured by White and taunted with the idea that she knew the truth about Pink but would not tell her for her own amusement. Furthermore, it's also shown that she has lost nearly all her senses as a result of the agonizing experimentation as every time the story is shown from her point of view, the world is shown monochrome as she can't truly appreciate the beauty of life anymore and can't taste anything as shown when Steven offered her pizza.
    • To further add to her tragedy, Pink Diamond, the only person that she truly cares about, is revealed to have betrayed her and left her behind to live her life as Rose Quartz, and the reveal utterly destroys her, causing her to scream out and be drawn to tears as she begs Steven to tell her why she had left her behind after everything they had been through. Ultimately causing her own denial to consume her and lead her to destroy Earth.
  • She genuinely cared about Pink Diamond, with her entire mission being to find the truth about what really happened to her to the point that White mentions that Black Pearl is essentially a walking corpse that is only kept alive by the sheer determination of wanting to avenger her diamond, this being her only purpose for living now.
    • While she does decide to destroy the entire Earth despite knowing how much it meant to Pink, she still hopes for the chance to talk with her after it and make peace with their situation.
  • She has a Pet the Dog moment where she gave Moonstone a tracking device, having left the tracker with Jade and the other rebels so that they could come and rescue her.
  • She has some genuine honor as she is willing to admit that Pearl is a better swordfighter and accept her defeat against her, showing some respect before deciding to instead start a fistfight.
  • She has some arguable moral agency as she has been driven to insanity by the excessive experimenting done on her, something that is openly discussed at the start of the story and White later reinforces this as Black Pearl has been robbed of her sense of identity and only keeps going to find the truth, having been giving the mindset that her only purpose is to serve Pink and to discover the truth.

Trivia[]

  • Out of the 4 Steven Universe IH, she's the only one to originate from a fanon work.
  • Since the comic could be continued in the future, her status might be affected.
  • She serves as a villainous equivalent to the Crystal Gems' Pearl. They were both pearls owned by Pink Diamond in the past with the purpose of keeping her entertained, however while Pearl was taken to Earth and learned to love and grow to be her own person, Black Pearl, having stayed on Homeworld, was experimented on and treated as a simple weapon for the Diamonds to use, losing herself and having Pink's shattering as her sole purpose. Pearl grew out of her dependence on Pink while Black Pearl is stuck in the past and views her as her reason to exist.
