~ Black Noir, along with the rest of Payback against Soldier Boy, also his last words before Soldier Boy caused him mental damage. |
Earving, better known as Black Noir, is a major antagonist in the 2019 Amazon Prime Video television series The Boys based on the comic book series of the same name.
A deeply psychologically damaged and traumatised villain, Noir was violently beaten to near death and burnt alive by Soldier Boy for betraying him. Surviving the fight, he lost the ability to see in one of his eyes, think cognitively and talk at all, rendering him with the same mental age as a small child. Due to this, Noir perfectly follows the orders of his boss, rendering him as one of the most deadly characters in the series.
His superstrength and heightened senses are matched only by his proficiency in the martial arts. Criminals run in terror at the mere mention of his name. Noir is also a former member of Payback who was rendered disfigured and mute by his former team leader-turned-archenemy Soldier Boy after plotting to kill him with the rest of his teammates during a mission with the American military.
He was portrayed by Nathan Mitchell. A younger version of him was portrayed by Fritzy-Klevans Destine.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- As Vought's assassin, he had killed a bunch of people in the past.
- While the heinous standards of The Boys are incredibly high, Black Noir easily passed it through his role in pushing Homelander further into villainy by covering up his crimes and terrible actions.
Past[]
- It was mentioned that when he was nine, he paralyzed a child, though it could have been unintentional.
- He hatched the plan and helped give Soldier Boy to the Russians, although he deserved it.
The Boys Presents: Diabolical[]
- He tied a terrorist to a tank at the power plant and led Homelander into killing him and blowing up the power plant.
- He snapped a hostage's neck to make sure she didn't get out about the massacre.
- He had Homelander lie out the power plant explosion to make sure that his identity as a hero was safe.
The Boys[]
Season 1[]
- He attempted to kill Frenchie and when Kimiko interfered, he attacked and mutilated her.
Season 2[]
- He killed Naqib and his men, splitting one's face open and beheading Naqib himself.
- He tracked down and attacked the boys, gassing them and almost killing Mother Milk and Butcher.
- He gassed a crowded cafe and kidnapped Starlight.
- He attacked Starlight and almost strangled her to death before Maeve interfered.
Season 3[]
- He kidnapped and locked up Maeve in a cell.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too tragic to even be NPE, as he was heavily abused by Soldier Boy and when he finally did something about it, he was brutally attacked and disfigured, leaving him permanently mute and incapable of fulfilling his dreams of becoming an actor.
- Because he has severe brain damage and is schizophrenic, he has clear agency issues, pretty much having the mind of a child.
- He has genuine moments of affability like giving sympathy to The Deep over his whale Lucy dying, trying cheer up a kid by playing with a toy bunny with him, and playing the piano with a man.
- He had a genuine friendship with Homelander as he helped cover up his crimes out of genuine kindness instead of just killing him like he was assigned to do. He also hugged him and was happy to see him when they reunited and it's implied that he kept the secret of Soldier Boy being his father to keep him from him.
- His death is played for sympathy as he is betrayed and killed by a remorseful Homelander and is comforted by his hallucinations as he goes into the light.
- Ultimately, his tragedy, his moral agency problems, his genuine friendship with Homelander and his genuinely affable moments make him a scapegoat by not deserving his death.
Trivia[]
- Only his TV series version counts as Inconsistently Heinous as his original comic version is Pure Evil due since he doesn’t have a tragic backstory or any sympathetic traits and is primarily portrayed as an irredeemable psychopath who commits horrid crimes like eating babies just to frame Homelander.
- Black Noir has the distinction of being the sole Sony Pictures television Inconsistently Heinous character to not come from the Breaking Bad franchise.
