William "Billy" Butcher is the deuteragonist of the 2006 comic book series The Boys. He also appears as a supporting protagonist in The Boys Presents: Diabolical and is the overarching protagonist of the comics' sequel/spin-off The Boys: Dear Becky.
He is the leader of a group of vigilantes he calls "The Boys," who are responsible for monitoring, investigating, and sometimes combating the corrupt and often reckless superhero community.
He is often portrayed as a tough, cunning, and often brutal individual who harbors a deep-seated hatred for superheroes, especially those who abuse their powers or act with impunity. He is driven by a personal vendetta against the most powerful superheroes, particularly Homelander, the leader of the superhero team known as The Seven.
In The Boys Presents: Diabolical, he is voiced by Jason Isaacs.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He is extremely xenophobic toward Supes, believing their very existence is a crime against nature and his prejudice often blinds him from seeing the good in Supes that have done nothing wrong, like Starlight.
- He is also very sadistic and lethal. He enjoys killing not just Supes, but people in general, having a direct kill count in the hundreds.
- While he initially started out as a well-intentioned extremist who genuinely believed Supes were dangerous and needed to be stopped, he eventually grows to love the thrill of killing Supes and prioritizes his own sadism over his mission.
- He physically assaults Kessler just to tell him that he is back in the fight against Vought. He also calls him a monkey while hurting him.
- His abuse toward Kessler is a constant theme throughout the story, as Butcher doesn’t understand or even try to understand Kessler’s feelings and he never gives him a say in anything.
- He injected Hughie with Compound V against his will, which later resulted in Hughie accidentally killing someone when he couldn't control his new powers.
- After learning SwingWing murdered Steven, a gay college student who had romantic feelings for him, Billy altered his jetpack, leading SwingWing flying to his death. Although it was deserved, Billy still lied to Hughie about killing SwingWing, claiming he spared him.
- To stop Little Nina from using her Supes to take over Russia, Butcher meets a pilot that works for Nina he tells him to plant a bomb in her vibrator when the pilot refused Butcher broke his arm. The pilot then gave in and he put the bomb on the vibrator which led to Nina’s death when she was going to use it, although Little Nina deserved this fate, Butcher still endangered the 2 pilots that were transporting her.
- Even though he already stopped Nina and her attempted takeover of Russia, he still took the opportunity to kill her Supes. He knew that Nina was giving her 150 Supes a substance that will eventually cause their heads to explode, so he took advantage of this as this substance messes up the compund v in their bloodstream, knowing this he took a detonator that had a button, Butcher then pushed this button and blew all of the Supes heads off at the push of a button.
- While having sex with Susan Raynor, he sadistically threatened to murder her entire family should she betray him and The Boys.
- He had Vogelbaum engineer a device that would blow up the heads of all Supes through the V in their bloodstream, essentially wanting to commit genocide.
- He did this while being fully aware that not all Supes were evil, and that there would be also be human casualties, such as the Vought Employees who also had Compound V in their system.
- After The Boys learn about his plans, he kills every single one of them, except Hughie, whom he coerces into killing him by pretending to have murdered Hughie's parents.
- While he has plenty of comedic moments, given the series is a black comedy known for its crude humor, they don't distract from his heinous actions and tend to highlight just how sadistic and cruel he can be.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's a very tragic character. He grew up with an abusive father who once knocked his mother's eye out right in front of him and would frequently abuse him and his brother, Lenny. Later in life, his beloved wife Becky would be raped by Black Noir, leading to her death during childbirth. This eventually drove him down a self-destructive path of vengeance that he fully expected to die in, and when he didn't, he decided to take everyone down with him.
- He helped MM amend his relationship with his troubled daughter Janine, by telling her to listen to her father and that her dad just wants what's the best for her, and to appreciate him more. He also stopped her from meeting some thugs, wanting to get rid of any bad influences in Janine’s life, which helps her and her father's relationship tremendously.
- Despite his sadistic nature, he commits numerous heroic acts, such as exposing Vought's corruption and investigating various Supes such as the G-Men and Tek Knight.
- He's shown to have some honor and is considerate of innocent civilians, often trying to keep them out of harm's way, like when he evacuated the Empire State Building before his clash with Hughie.
- He also has standards, as he was appalled at the CIA's senseless massacre of the G-Men. Although, he didn't feel bad for what happened to them.
- He cares for numerous people:
- He loved Becky with all his heart, and her death was his main motivation for wating to kill Supes.
- He loves his dog Terror and threatened to "go to war" with Homelander if anything ever happened to him. And after Noir killed Terror, Butcher attempted to kill who he thought was responsible, while in fit of rage.
- He cares a lot about Mother's Milk and at one point referred to him as his best friend. When he had the choice to kill MM's mother, he chose not to, even though her death would have been helpful to him. He also felt guilt and had a saddened expression when he finally killed MM.
- He loved his mother and brother, the latter of whom he frequently sheltered and protected from their father's abuse.
- Despite everything he put him through, his care for Hughie is genuine. He was the only member of The Boys who Butcher couldn't bring himself to kill, and even got himself paralyzed while saving him during their fight on the Empire State Building.
- He also seemed to care about Frenchie and even The Female, because he wanted them to die without knowing anything and thought that dying like that would be the best for them.
- Despite brutally killing him, Butcher still cared for Vas enough to trying to give him a quick death, and was legitimately shocked when Hughie tells him that Vas death was more agonizing and long.
- He was genuinely conflicted about his plan to commit genocide to the point where he actually intended for Hughie to kill him in order to be thwarted, and died with a smile on his face knowing he had been stopped.
