Betty Grof is a supporting antagonist in Adventure Time and one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Prismo) of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
She was once the fiancée of Simon Petrikov before he became the Ice King. This caused her to become desperate to cure him, and she temporarily became an antagonist upon gaining Magic Man's powers.
She was voiced by Lena Dunham and later by Felicia Day. However, in "King's Ransom" Tom Herpich provided her disguised voice.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- She had a group of foxes kidnap Ice King's penguin, Gunter, and demanded the Ice Crown in exchange for him.
- She uploaded a digital version of herself into the Ice King's crown in an attempt to cure him, which ended up temporarily driving the Ice King even more insane.
- After the entire Land of Ooo was corrupted by the empowered Elementals, she had Finn gather all of the jewels from their crowns and give them to her, claiming that she would use them to save Ooo. When he gave them to her, she flew off with the jewels and left him surrounded by the corrupted candy people, who nearly brainwashed him.
- When Ice King told her that they should go back to rescue Finn, Betty dismissed his concerns and knocked him unconscious when he insisted on doing it.
- She intended to use the gems to create a time portal and go through it so that she could prevent Simon from ever putting on the crown and stop the Mushroom War from ever occurring. If she succeeded in the latter, that would have resulted in all of Ooo and its inhabitants getting erased from the timeline, something she didn't care much about.
- She insulted Ice King while he was tied up, despite him stating that he was worthy of being respected as well, and she expressed excitement at the prospect of him being erased from existence.
- In a final attempt to cure Simon, she summoned GOLB to Earth so that she could try to harness his power, despite knowing how powerful and dangerous he was. This put the entire world in danger of being turned into an apocalyptic wasteland overrun by his abominations.
- Although the heinous standard is high, she stands out compared to some of the more heinous villains due to her having fewer resources.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She deeply cares about Simon. She dedicated all of her time to saving him and all of her worst actions were done in order to find a way to cure him.
- This also makes her an extremist and anti-villain, since she ultimately had good intentions.
- She is a very tragic character who was forced to watch as the person she cared about the most was driven insane by a horrific curse. This resulted in her becoming more and more desperate throughout the series, and her distress is played for sympathy numerous times.
- She suffers from moral agency issues due to gaining Magic Man’s insanity after gaining his powers. All her heinous acts were done with this insanity, and when she was reset to her original form and lost her magic, she regained her sanity.
- This is further deepened when it is explained that, MMS (Magic Madness and Sadness) runs through all magic users, and because of that she is basically crazy as long as she has magic.
- She ultimately redeemed herself by banishing GOLB (knowing that doing so would erase part of her from existence) from Earth after fusing with him and helping Simon when they reunited over a decade later.
