It's showtime!
~ Beetlejuice's most iconic quote.

Betel Geuse Jr., publicly known as Beetlejuice, or sometimes spelled Betelgeuse, is the titular main antagonist of Tim Burton's 1988 film of the same name, one of the two main protagonists (alongside Lydia Deetz) of its 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and will return in some capacity in the upcoming threequel.

He is a sinister, mischievous, and obnoxious ghost and self-proclaimed "bio-exorcist" who seeks to spread chaos and mayhem in the living world.

He was portrayed by Michael Keaton.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • It's made clear that he only cares about himself and the chaos that he brings.
    • Furthermore, he doesn't care about the living and would risk potentially harming someone.
  • While Delores sucked out people's souls, Betelgeuse still manages to stand out, due to his unique ways of trapping several people in a FWTD.

Beetlejuice[]

  • He lured in and ate a sentient fly using chocolate.
  • He tries to sexually assault Barbara Maitland numerous times.
  • He shapeshifted into a snake to scare Lydia's parents and Otho Fenlock.
  • Even though she was a teenager at the time, he tried to marry Lydia. Although this was apart of his plan to be free, he still had a demented fondness for her.
  • He pulls tricks on the Maitland couple when they interfered to save Lydia and try to banish him.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice[]

  • It is revealed in this film that he used to be a grave robber while he was alive, stealing the clothes of fresh corpses that had their lives taken by the Black Plague.
  • He has been stalking Lydia for over thirty years, which made her so paranoid to the point where she had to take medication for it.
  • He made Bob dress up as himself so Delores would suck his soul instead, which would allow him to get away from her.
  • He deformed the faces of Rory's social media influencers right before trapping them in their phones.
  • He attempts to forcibly marry Lydia once again and when Delia and Astrid try to stop him, he pulls a ventriloquist trick to make them sing along and dance to MacArthur Park.
  • He freezes Wolf Jackson and the Ghoul Squad to prevent them from arresting him for illegally bringing Lydia into the afterlife to rescue Astrid.
  • When Astrid summons a sandworm to get rid of him and Delores, he poses as a matador to lure the sandworm right towards Delores and Rory to devour them. While Delores certainly deserved her fate for being the leader of a soul-sucking cult, Rory still didn't deserve to die, despite being a gold-digger who tried to take advantage of Lydia.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has many comedic moments that detract from his villainy to the point where he can't be NPE.
  • He has some standards, as he seemed to find both Jeremy and Rory genuinely loathsome, as he was happy and enthusiastic about sending the former to Hell with a gleeful "Later, f-cker" and exposing the latter as a money grubbing douchebag, showing disgust towards gold diggers, was genuinely concerned when Lydia said she wanted to "get in", meaning she'll commit suicide, and despite being a self-serving creep, he is always honest with his victims.
  • He is pretty affable to his employees.
  • He is on-&-off, as even though it was done out of pragmatic reasons, he still helped Lydia save Astrid from Jeremy, who would've swapped souls with her to become alive again.

Trivia[]

  • In an early draft, he was much more darker and violent, attempting to kill Lydia’s sister by removing her organs. If this had been kept, he would have been worse.
  • In the scrapped film Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, he drugs Lydia with a love potion to force her to marry him. During the climax, he commands an army of monsters to kill everyone by throwing them into a volcano and comes close to slitting Lydia's throat so they can be together forever. Had this film was made, he would have possibly been Near Pure Evil.
