NOTE: This article is about the Dragon Ball Super version of Beerus. His original script version is actually Pure Evil.

Before any creation must come destruction!
~ Beerus

Beerus (in Japanese: ビルス, Birusu) is a major character in the Dragon Ball franchise, first appearing as the main antagonist of the 2013 anime film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and the tritagonist of Dragon Ball Super.

He is the God of Destruction of Universe 7 whose duty is to destroy inhabited planets so new life can grow and keep balance within the universe, in opposing force to the Kais, who are the Gods of Creation. Nominally, Beerus's duties are to coordinate with the Kais to promote overall mortal development within his own universe by removing obstacles and inadequate species; though he is less interested in his duties than he is in pursuing his own interests and has an antagonistic relationship with his counterparts. He is also the archenemy of Quitela.

He was voiced by Jason Douglas in the English dubbed version. While in the original Japanese version, he was voiced by Kōichi Yamadera, who also voices Akihiko Kayaba in Sword Art Online.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • Destroyed numerous planets in Universe 7 in order to grow new life and thus keep the entire universe stable. While his position is necessary to maintain the natural order, it doesn't change the fact that he killed countless beings in the process. What's worse is that he often destroys planets for petty reasons.
    • As Old Kai put it, there is often no real reason for his destructive ways, since he does not coordinate with the Kais and merely acts on his own whim when destroying planets. For instance, he destroyed half a planet simply because he found the planet's food to be too greasy.
  • While he comes from a race of Gods who are said to destroy numerous planets on a daily basis, not only are the rest of Gods not shown destroying planet in the Anime or Manga but all of their destructions are off-screen and have no direct effect on the story. Additionally, he's so far the only God shown to destroy planets for petty reasons outside of his duty as a God of Destruction, meaning he does it on a daily basis, he also constantly endangers his own universe by his laziness and was indirectly responsible for the destruction of 6 universes, which allows him to stand out from the rest of Gods.
  • He is responsible for nearly all of the deaths and destruction in the franchise, both directly and indirectly.
    • His laziness constantly endangers Universe 7, as he lets several heinous villains, such as Frieza, Kid Buu, and Moro, reign unchecked, even though it's the responsibility of a God of Destruction to deal with such serious threats.
    • He did nothing to stop Moro, forcing the Grand Supreme Kai to sacrifice a lot of his power to stop him.
    • He did nothing to stop Bibidi and Kid Buu's rampage, letting the Supreme Kais be massacred until only Shin and Old Kai remained. This is also a bit of a suicide move, since the Kais are connected to the Gods of Destruction and Angels, and if they die, so do the Destroyers and Angels, meaning Beerus basically put his own life at risk, as well as Whis'.
    • He played a major role in the Saiyan genocide by asking Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta, an act that set up the events of the entire franchise. While Frieza already wanted to destroy Planet Vegeta due to fearing the Super Saiyan legend, Beerus openly allowed him to do so.
    • Beerus had countless opportunities to stop all of these villains and yet he never did, so a great part of the responsibility for their crimes falls on him, and is the reason why Universe 7 is in low mortal ranking compared to the other universes.
  • He fought against his brother Champa several times, endangering not only Universe 7, but also Universe 6, since a fight between two Gods of Destruction must never happen for that reason, but he himself established that he doesn't care about that because of the hatred he feels for his brother.
  • Even if he has grown a bit more affable over time, he still threatened the Z-Fighters with death or the destruction of Earth numerous times if they irritated him in any way and was even shown abusing Goku and Vegeta for even the smallest reasons.

Background[]

  • Didn't participate in the Hide and Seek Tournament, resulting in Zeno erasing six universes that used to be a part of the multiverse that originally consisted of 18 universes. Therefore, he was indirectly responsible for the deaths of innumerable lives.
  • It was stated by Whis that Beerus once destroyed the Sun, eventually freezing the Solar System, and it would've stayed that way if Whis didn't rewind time.
  • Sealed Old Kai within the Z-Sword for apparently a petty reason, leaving him in said sword for centuries, basically a fate worse than death, until Old Kai was finally freed when Gohan accidentally broke the sword.
  • He made King Kai's planet smaller because he didn't like the food King Kai made.
  • He asked King Vegeta III for the most comfortable pillow in the universe, leading King Vegeta and the Saiyans to conquer various planets and exterminate their races just to get it, and Beerus shows no remorse for it.
    • He also brutally tortured King Vegeta III once, as shown in one of Vegeta IV's flashbacks.

Dragon Ball Super[]

  • He came close to destroying Earth simply for the petty reason that Fat Buu wouldn't share pudding with him and brutally beat up the Z-Fighters. While his anger at Buu is understandable, it does not justify his attempt to destroy Earth.
  • He slapped Bulma, which caused Vegeta to go blind with rage. Even though Bulma slapped him first, that was because Beerus was already acting bad to her friends and was done to discipline him.
  • During his battle against Goku, their punches were so powerful that they endangered the integrity of the universe, and he even launched a sphere of power so powerful that, had it detonated at full force, it would have wiped out the entire universe, but fortunately Beerus held back much of the attack's power as he started to acknowledge Goku's bravery.
  • He allowed Champa to kill his team for losing to Universe 7 and he would've had Zeno not arrived.
  • He destroyed Dr. Mashirito's soul simply for annoying him. Then, when Arale called him a kitty cat, Beerus tried to destroy her as well and would've done it if he did not get indigestion from the food pellet he ate.
  • He forced Krillin to fight in the Tournament of Power and threatened to destroy him if he didn't (although the fate of the universe depended on a team of fighters, and one could argue Beerus was trying to scare Krillin into fighting in the tournament).

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is too comedic to be PE or NPE, since despite being one of these villains with countless kills, he has many comedic moments through the series that detract him from his villainy, such as him easily getting angry or acting childish for petty reasons, him going through slapstick during his fight with Goku and later getting asleep just before he could destroy Earth, him eating spicy food at the end of the Battle of Gods film, him disguising as Monaka to fight Goku, him getting indigestion from eating a food pellet and him constantly getting feared of Zeno whenever he sees him. Futhermore, while his worst actions, such as destroying numerous planets, letting Frieza destroy Planet Vegeta, attempting to destroy Earth and letting Champa murder his team, are taken seriously, there are others that are played for black comedy because of how petty they are.
  • He has shown to have genuine care or respect for many individuals:
    • He cares for Whis, as despite them being odds to each other, they were shown to get along multiple times.
    • Along with Whis, he has a strong friendship with Bulma, and while he was bad to her in the first day he met her, it was only during his time as a villain to the Z-Fighters.
    • He enjoyed his time with Bulma's daughter Bulla, showing he also cares for her.
    • He forgives Gowasu (the Supreme Kai of the 10th Universe) for Zamasu's heinous crimes, but also recommended him to choose his apprentice more carefully from now on, which Gowasu accepts.
    • He respects the Z-Fighters, especially Goku.
      • In the Battle of Gods film, he decided that he would destroy the Earth later, showing he is honorable. (however in the anime he didn't destroyed Earth because he felt asleep, so this is a minor prevention).
      • He sincerely praised the Z-fighter's who lasted longer in the Tournament of Power, especially Gohan and Vegeta.
      • He had Whis revive Frieza after Universe 7 won during the Tournament of Power just as he, Whis and Goku promised.
      • After his battle with Goku, he slowly started to lose his hatred against the Z-Fighters, and he even got along with them whenever it is a good day for him.
    • Despite having multiple childish fights and moments with his brother Champa, he ultimately cares for him, as he never actually tries to kill him.
      • Due to Universe 6's Earth getting destroyed due to war and Champa not being able to try out Earth's food, after the tournament between Universe 6 & 7, Beerus used the Super Dragon Balls to wish back Universe 6's Earth.
      • He was shown to be saddened by his brother's death when Universe 6 lost during the Tournament of Power, and while he tries to deny it, it's only because he would get ashamed to admit it in front of Whis and the Z-Fighters.
  • He is an anti-villain, since all the destruction of the planets is to maintain the balance of the universe and thus create new life. However, considering that he actually likes his job as the God of Destruction of Universe 7 and usually destroy planets for petty reasons, this is a minor prevention.
  • He is On & Off, since he constantly allies himself with the heroes and has performed various heroic actions throughout the series (such as killing Zamasu to avoid the disaster that this generates in Trunks' future, although it didn't work).
  • He showed genuine disgust when Mai held Trunks at gunpoint, showing he has standards. He also, like everyone else, shows anger when Champa attempts to unfairly demand that Goku has a rematch with Botamo despite beating him fair and square, and shows disgust when Zeno destroys universes and that is the main reason why he fears him.
  • He showed remorse for his selfish and lazy behavior when he realized he got too confident that killing Present Zamasu would reverse what happened in the Future Timeline, and then sent Gowasu and Shin to help Goku, Vegeta and Future Trunks in their battle against Goku Black and Future Zamasu.

Trivia[]

  • In the Original Script of Battle of Gods, Beerus was a completely different character. Unlike his finished counterpart, the original version of him in the script was an evil god who wishes to bring destruction out of pure sadism. He was also responsible for the Saiyan race turning evil by infecting them with a virus, and he would have done the same thing with Goku's Friends to turn them against him, and there wouldn't be Whis accompanying him. Should this be kept, he would possibly be Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil rather than Inconsistently Heinous.
