Another one's awake! And such a handsome specimen at that.

Azazel, later known as Loremaster, is a supporting character from the 2020 indie game Helltaker, and the main antagonist of its DLC Examtaker.

While initially a naive and curious angel, who was manipulated by other demons and slowly succumbing into a demon, she later took the name "Loremaster" and performed experiments to create fusions between a demon and a human in pursuit of uniting Hell, Heaven, and the mortal realm.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • After spending too much time with Helltaker's other harem girls, she began to grow horns and became a lot more demonic, which resulted in her becoming a fallen angel, who usurped Lucifer and took control over the entirely of Hell.
  • As Loremaster, she subjected various humans to cruel experiments, forcing them to undergo demonic fusions. While it's mostly off-screen, we get a clear idea of what exactly her experiments entail through the DLC's protagonist Subject 67, whose body is described as no longer being his own, suggesting a fate worse than death. This is further supported by the batch number of her experiments and the death of Subject 66.
  • After each subject awoke, she would force them to navigate a series of very deadly traps to test their abilities, which resulted in multiple deaths.
  • She shows no remorse for her actions and states in the ending cutscene that she fully intends on continuing her experiments.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She's very comedic and never meant to be taken seriously like the other characters in both the DLC and base game, with her not even being treated seriously by Lucifer herself (who only views her as "a thirsty adolescent" despite Azazel usurping her).
    • Even her worst act of forcing humans to undergo experimentation are played for comedy, since the experiment itself involved a robot performing a funny dance, making her crimes not serious either.
  • The biggest reason she can't be Silly NPE is she is very affable towards her demon allies, like when she complimented Justice's apple pies. This also applied to Subject 67, as she offered him a robotic cat with tentacles. It is also implied she still loves and misses the Helltaker.
  • Despite her intellect, she has moral agency issues, believing that she's still an angel while her demonic appearance suggests otherwise. This shows her limited view of reality as well, since she genuinely believes that her actions are noble.
  • She is an extremist who believes her actions will benefit Hell, Heaven, and Earth alike, in hopes they will all be united some day.

Trivia[]

  • Since the game's developer stated he's open to making a sequel in the future, there's a chance her status could change.
