Astra is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Non) of Season 1 of Supergirl.

She is the aunt of Supergirl and the leader of a group of rogue Kryptonians imprisoned on Fort Rozz for terrorist actions on Krypton. After crashlanding on Earth, Astra and her husband Non plot to enact Myriad to enslave the populace. However, Astra reveals her increasingly sympathetic nature through the season and ultimately dies reconciling with Kara and warning the heroes about her viler husband.

She was portrayed by Laura Benanti.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • She formed a rogue terrorist Kryptonian faction and launched several attacks on the planet, with one person ultimately dying at her husband's hands.
  • She developed Myriad to turn the population into mindless slaves twith Myriad explicitly being stated to rob people of their free will, individuality, and spirit by shutting down the parts of the brain that cause optimism and hope, essentially a fate worse than death. Once on Earth, she plotted to do the same.
  • She kidnapped Alex to force Supergirl into a confrontation.
  • She let herself be captured so her army could launch a bloody attack on Lord Technologies, whilst giving the heroes a false location towards a hidden bomb as a trap in an attempt to blow them all up.
  • She tried to murder Martian Manhunter, forcing Alex to impale her through the chest.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She’s quite tragic as she figured out Krypton was dying and tried to warn her people only for her pleas to fall on deaf ears, forcing her to resort to terroristic methods to try and catch her people’s attention. Not only does she end up being proven right, but her failure to save her homeworld is what motivates her villainy to save Earth.
  • She is an anti-villain/extremist that only sought to save Krypton and Earth from environmental collapse that would wipe out their populations.
  • She deeply loved Kara and refused to kill her, even forbidding her husband Non from harming her. She also did love her husband, Non.
  • She has a sense of honor as she forced Non to honor a prisoner exchange, told Alex how to stop the Black Mercy, and spared Alex multiple times as Alex herself pointed out despite having the perfect opportunity to kill her.
  • Her death is heavily played for sympathy as she essentially redeems herself by reconciling with Kara and abandoning her villainy, even trying to warn the heroes about Non.
