| ~ Jason's villainous breakdown after revealing his identity to Batman |
Jason Todd, also known as the Arkham Knight and later the Red Hood, is the titular secondary antagonist of the 2015 video game Batman: Arkham Knight and the titular main protagonist of its Red Hood DLC.
He was the second Robin, a sidekick of Batman, after Dick Grayson, until the Joker lured him in a trap, tortured him and made it seem to Batman that he killed him, leading to Jason thinking Batman abandoned him for a new sidekick, driving him to get revenge, until his fight with Batman, which would lead to his redemption, causing him to become the Red Hood, a murderous and crime-fighting vigilante.
He is voiced by Troy Baker, who also voiced Two-Face in the same series, Joel Miller in The Last of Us and Sinestro in Injustice: Gods Among Us.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Even as Robin, he frequently disregarded Batman's orders due to his rashness and lack of self-control, wanting to be treated more as a partner and son rather than just a sidekick. His recklessness resulted in him falling in a trap led by the Joker, due to Jason wanting to kill him to stop the menace, resulting in his torture.
- After his escape thanks to forming an alliance with Deathstroke, Jason took advantage of Batman's distraction towards Joker's Titan goals, infiltrating Wayne Tower and swindling 500 million dollars to their funds. Following this, he and Slade flee to South America and used the money they stole from Bruce to form a militia with disgruntled army veterans.
- Nine months later after Joker's death, Jason returned to Gotham to take revenge against Batman, thus donning the identity of the Arkham Knight.
- He and Scarecrow teamed up with other villains to kill Batman, convincing them to put 3 billion dollars.
- He also proceeded to spitefully threaten those who refused to join in his plan, most notably holding Poison Ivy at gunpoint and taking Nora away from Mr. Freeze. The latter action ultimately ended up taking her out of cyro-stasis.
- Killed several of the Penguin's men after they tried to double-cross him under his orders.
- Helped Scarecrow release the Cloudburst of fear toxins, driving the people of Gotham out in fear.
- Terrorized Gotham by ordering his men to kill Batman.
- Taunted Batman that he knew his identity when they met again after many years.
- Kidnapped Oracle to turn Gordon against Batman and as leverage to force Gordon to work for him.
- After Scarecrow was temporarily stopped by Batman, Jason took over the Cloudburst and released the Fear Toxin himself over Gotham, causing hundreds, if not thousands of people to go crazy and presumably die.
- He's evidently a bad boss towards his men despite their loyalty to him, constantly threatening to kill them as Batman disables their operations.
- Even after his redemption, he is still lethal as he goes about killing criminals in order to dispose of them, with Black Mask being a primary example.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Tragic doesn't even begin to describe Jason, as he is far, FAR too tragic and sympathetic to qualify as anything but IH for the following reasons:
- He was born on a rooftop to unloving, deadbeat parents, who tried pawning him off to a mob boss to pay a debt immediately after his birth.
- Throughout his childhood, he was constantly abused by his father and neglected by his mother, with the former saying he would never amount to anything, claiming Jason was so worthless he couldn't even sell him.
- Both of his parents died, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets until Batman found him.
- He was kidnapped and tortured by Joker for over a year just to spite Batman, even being falsely told that the latter replaced him with Tim Drake as means of breaking his spirit.
- Even when it seemed his torture was over, Harley Quinn prolonged it even further after he survived Joker's gunshot, beating and drugging him until he finally snapped and became the Arkham Knight.
- Following Joker's death, his actions towards Jason are shown have had a lasting impact over him, with the latter saying that his laughter still echoes throughout his head.
- Overall, Jason's tragedy extends way before Joker's torture of him even began.
- Despite his acts of recklessness, he only wanted to be seen as a son to Bruce, and his proactiveness was his attempt of making Batman proud on him. This also makes Jason somewhat insecure.
- He has moral agency issues as he is very clearly unhinged from Joker's torture, which is evidenced by his rapid mood swings.
- Him wanting to murder the Joker which lead to his capture was done with good intentions in mind, as he believed he was far too dangerous to be left alive. Considering everything the Joker has done, not to mention the breaking point for Jason involved him massacring an entire kindergarten class and stitching their corpses back together, which was solely done just to provoke him, he was certainly not wrong.
- Even after becoming the Arkham Knight, he still loved and cared for some people:
- He never stopped caring for Alfred and Barbara Gordon. In his interview tapes, he asked about Alfred and wanted to know if he was well. He also protected Barbara from Scarecrow's torture and threatened to kill anyone if they harmed her.
- Despite his initial anger and hatred towards Batman, Jason still held respect for him, as he never revealed his identity to Scarecrow. Once Bruce makes it clear that he still loves Jason and never abandoned him to his fate like Joker said, he was genuinely moved and dropped his pursuit of revenge, even coming to his aid by rescuing him from Scarecrow, showing that Jason never truly stopped loving his adoptive father.
- He is an anti-villain and a genuine extremist, believing that by killing villains will make Gotham a safer place.
- After Batman got through to him, Jason abandoned the identity of Arkham Knight and redeemed himself by becoming the Red Hood, seeking to fill Bruce's role as Gotham City's protector after his presumed death in activating the Knightfall Protocol.
