Anthy Himemiya is the deuteragonist of the anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Introduced as the Rose Bride at Ohtori Academy that Utena attends, she possesses the ability to "revolutionize the world" as a result of having the power of Dios sealed within her. She is passed around by numerous students in the student council that serve as her betrothed, who are able to do whatever they wish with her and which she follows the commands of.
In truth, she is the servant of her sexually abusive brother Akio Ohtori, who was formerly Prince Dios and wishes to reclaim his power after she had to seal it in order to save his life as he risked death from exhaustion from being forced to save the women of the world, which resulted in her being stabbed by thousands of spears, the pain of which she experiences constantly. Under his emotional manipulation, she has lead dozens of betrothed to their deaths in expectation that one of them will possess the force of will to recover the power of Dios.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- As the series goes on, it becomes clear she holds a great degree of loathing and disdain from humanity as a whole. While understandable given her experiences, this sticks even when given kindness by other people.
- Is demonstrated to be quite misogynistic despite herself being a woman, notably saying things such as "All girls are like the Rose Bride" and saying that Utena is incapable of becoming her prince due to her being a girl.
- It's indicated as a result of her powers that her obedience is the sole reason that Akio is able to do the horrible and supernatural actions that he does, and the various fantastical events in the series are only possible due to her power. The series would have never began if she left him when it became clear he was becoming abusive and intended to hurt more people.
- She is completely capable of leaving Ohtori Academy and making Akio more or less powerless anytime on her own free will, and the only thing keeping her there is her own devotion to him.
- As a result of her powers, Ohtori Academy has been kept in a recursive time loop under the orders of her brother Akio Ohtori.
- Has manipulated dozens of duelists in order to assist in recovering the Power of Dios, with all of them presumably having been killed.
- Turns a blind eye and even sometimes assists in covering up Akio's decade-long history of molesting various students as young as 12 at Ohtori Academy, including Utena herself.
- Manipulates Professor Nemuro/Souji Mikage by manipulating his memories so severely it creates a hole in time and reality where he can exist and the building he worked as well despite the fact he burnt it down 50 years ago and imitating Mamiya, the young boy he had attempted to save who had already died of his illness long beforehand.
- Assists Akio in poisoning his fiance with a poison apple so that he can maintain complete control of the school.
- Betrays Utena out of her emotional obsession with Akio by stabbing her in the back, which eventually leads to her taking the swords of hatred in her place.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- Her backstory is incredibly sympathetic, as she operated solely out of desperation to save her older brother's life and was repaid by being brutally stabbed and having the feeling of the swords stabbing her constantly reverberate through her body for her entire life.
- Most of her worst traits, from her misogyny and her general hatred of humanity, as well as her worst actions, are a direct result of Akio's years of emotional and sexual abuse. It's repeatedly indicated that without his influence she would be an immensely better person.
- She is incredibly sympathetic and tragic, as she is forcibly pimped out by her brother by contestant that frequently abuse her and forced to act as a tool for his desires, as well as a toy for his own sexual amusement every weekend.
- While she can leave at any time, it's emphasized that her life experience has left her such of a shell of a person that she's completely emotionally dependent on Akio despite him continually abusing her.
- Genuinely loves her pet monkey Chu-Chu.
- Demonstrates extreme remorse when she attempts to commit suicide out of grief for the numerous people she's lead to their deaths as the Rose Bride before being stopped by Utena.
- Redeems herself at the end of the series by finally leaving Akio for good, depriving him fully of any magical powers he possessed, and pledging to find and re-unite with Utena.
