I found myself a father... a leader... a teacher.
~ Amanda regarding her relationship with John Kramer.

Amanda Young is a major antagonist in Lionsgate's Saw franchise.

She was one of John Kramer's many apprentices, assisting him on his crusade to test anyone deemed as ungrateful to being alive as part of his macabre games as the vigilante Jigsaw Killer. However, due to her tragic past and insecurities, Amanda develops an unhealthy obsession with him while feeling that the only way in which people will stop suffering is dying, which puts John at odds with her in the long run.

She was portrayed by Shawnee Smith.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • She pushed her boyfriend Cecil Adams to rob the clinic when he didn't want to, which results in Jill Tuck's miscarriage, kickstarting the events that led to John becoming Jigsaw.
  • She either knocked our or murdered the dogs Mateo was taking care of as their veterinarian in Saw X. This makes her the only villain in the series to harm an animal.
  • She kidnapped Adam Stanheight and places him in the Bathroom Trap and also doomed him to fail by tossing the key on him instead of tying it to him, which results in it falling down the drain.
  • She later killed Adam by suffocating him with a bag, under the pretext of putting him out of his misery even though she could have helped him escape from the bathroom trap instead.
  • She helped kidnap the Nerve Gas victims and set up the trial, all while playing the victim.
  • She intentionally created several inescapable traps that give her victims a 0% chance to survive.
    • She chained Eric Matthews in the bathroom as revenge for framing her and left him for dead. When Eric freed himself, she attacked him and left him to bleed out from his wounds. Had Jigsaw not saved him, he likely would have.
    • She put Troy in an inescapable trap by putting chains in his tendons, shoulders, and jaw and killed him with a nail bomb. Even if Troy did free himself, the exit door was completely welded shut just to decimate Troy's hope to survive.
    • She then put Kerry in another inescapable trap where she has to burn her hand in acid to retrieve a key to unlock her harness. Because the harness was entangled with her ribs, Kerry was unable to escape and has her ribcage torn apart; all the while, Amanda coldly watched her execution.
  • She strapped a shotgun-collar around Lynn's neck that blows her head off when either John dies or Lynn runs away, which happened with the former.
  • She insults and abuses Lynn throughout her test.
  • She gets into an envious argument with John and reveals that she doesn't really believe in his philosophy before shooting Lynn through the stomach and indirectly getting her killed when the collar she had blows her face up.
    • This action also gets everyone else in the room killed (including herself), as Jeff killed her and John out of retaliation for harming his wife, which causes him to fail his test, inadvertently gets Lynn killed, and also gets Jeff shot by Peter Strahm later on.
  • While John Kramer, Mark Hoffman and Logan Nelson are more heinous than her, she had fewer resources. Plus, Amanda stands out for putting her victims in inescapable traps, which is something John, and (possibly) Logan, avoided doing.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She is tragic as she was abused and neglected by her father when she was a child, which had her develop huge abandonment issues and self-hatred. She then later got falsely accused of having drugs by Eric Matthews and was put in jail, where she developed a heroin addiction.
  • She loved John like a father, examples of her love being when she started to break down when he started seizing during his surgery and is defensive of him when people call him murderer.
  • Just like John Kramer, she genuinely cared for a child by the name of Carlos, as she was against him being innocently tortured during the Bloodboarding Trap by Cecilia Pederson, who was intended to be in that trap.
  • Also like John Kramer, she was absolutely devastated when Gabriella was killed by Cecilia, and before she was killed, wanted to take her to the hospital to treat Gabriella for her injuries.
  • She has some standards as she warned Jeff Denlon's daughter, Corbett, to not trust Hoffman and that he was a dangerous man, although it's slightly hypocritical as she was most likely the one to put her in the locked room.
  • She also protected Daniel Matthews from Xaiver despite Daniel’s father putting her in jail she shown no hate towards Daniel.
  • She felt heavy remorse for Adam's fate as she apologized profusely and mercy-killed him later.
    • There's also a deleted scene where before the Bathroom Trap, Adam flirts with her and takes a picture of her as she goes into her apartment which makes her smile, which also suggests she had genuine fondness for him.
  • She also felt remorse for Jill's miscarriage and broke down immediately when it happened.
  • Overall, she is portrayed with way too much sympathy throughout the franchise and has many scenes were the audience is supposed to sympathize with her.
    • Her telling the story at the MPD where she recaps when she was put in the trap, and immediately broke down.
    • Her cutting herself and being comforted by John.
    • Her panicking and cutting her thigh after John almost dies during surgery.
    • Her crying after reading the note that Hoffman gave to her for blackmail.
    • Her death, as she is betrayed by John and he reveals that he was testing her the whole time, which puts her in utter shock and despair in her last moments.
  • She has developed many insecurities, with her just wanting to be loved and needing guidance through life, which is why she clung onto John so hard.

Trivia[]

  • According to Shawnee Smith, the original plans for her in Saw III involved her survival in the film, which would have likely allowed her to return in the following sequels, but as filming progressed, the filmmakers opted for a depressing ending in which everyone but Jeff Denlon would die. Had the original ending been kept and she had returned in the sequels that followed, it's possible that she would have become much more heinous.
  • She is, alongside her mentor John Kramer, her fellow apprentice Logan Nelson and her mentor's copycat William Schenk, one of the four Saw characters to be Inconsistently Heinous.
