Ainz Ooal Gown, born Satoru Suzuki, and formerly known as Momonga, is the main protagonist of the Overlord franchise.
He is the last remaining Supreme Being of Nazarick, being the guild master of the guild named before him, and the Sorcerer King of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Within the human world, he goes by the name Momon, a powerful knight who seeks to spread his name across the entire world.
He is voiced by Satoshi Hino in Japanese (who also voiced Takuto Maruki in Persona 5 Royal) and Chris Guerro in English.

What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- While it was the NPCs' idea to take over the world, Ainz ran with that idea anyway since he desired to spread his name across the world.
- Some (though not all) of his heroic deeds are out of pragmatism.
- While Ainz does have many comedic moments they are mostly when he isn't doing villainy usually around the NPCs only, in his personal thoughts of him being shocked or surprised, and everyone else take him seriously in-universe even then usually misinterpreting them as schemes. Plus the dark themes of the series are too much for those to be detracting moments to undermine him as a threat anyways.
Overlord[]
- He allowed Demiurge to run an human farm for breeding and skinning humans.
- Allowed Demiurge to raid E-Rantel during Demonic Disturbance getting many killed while taking 100,000 hostages which he later ordered to be killed.
- While Nigredo and Pestonya did save some of the children hostages, this was still a large kill count even then.
- Had some monsters attack Carne Village which he swore to protect to test its defenses, though no one died thankfully.
- He had lured workers into the Great Tomb of Nazarick to be killed to test his defenses and later threatened their home nation if their leader Jircniv Rune Farlord El-Nix didn't apologize.
- Killed 70,000 soldiers during the battle of Katz Plains with an powerful spell and Dark Young.
- These soldiers were used in the initial steps for a massive spell which created 5 Dark Young, who then went on to kill at least 170,000 more soldiers, with the few Re-Estize soldiers surviving only due to being at the rear and fleeing quickly.
- Allowed Albedo to nearly kill an child (manipulated by Demiurge) for simply throwing an rock at an Death Knight even when the mother apologized, she would've killed them had if Pandora's Actor as Momon didn’t intervened in this staged act.
- Fabricated the events of the Holy Kingdom's attack by pretending to be the hero while Demiurge pretended to be the villain, which got many killed including Holy Queen Calca Bessarez, Kelart Custodio, and Caspond Bessarez who he replaced with the latter with an doppelgänger to be a puppet leader while making him look like an hero winning many over to his side including corrupting Neia Baraja into making her an obsessed extremist while unintentionally at first but he took advantage of it anyways.
- Destroyed the Re-Estate Kingdom to show as an example which even the Platinum Dragon said it was too harsh of a punishment for a simple robbery.
- While he was swayed by Nigredo, Pestonya, and Sebas to spare some only 10% was spared, meaning 90% still was killed and any who survived got PTSD.
- When some nobles killed Zanac to save their spines, he ordered them and their families to be tortured by Neuronist Painkill without end even when they beg for death. While it may be justified for the individuals who did it but their families were not as they weren't even involved in this act, meaning he punished innocent people to be tortured for something they didn't even do for their association with them.
- Remains unpunished for his actions, making him a Karma Houdini.
- Since he is the main character, he can't fail his own series heinous standard since he basically sets up the heinous standard with his acts.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Ainz is too sympathetic and has too many redeeming qualities that prevent him from being PE or NPE, the examples include:
- He is tragic as he lived in a dystopian nightmare where the companies rule over everyone after government collapsed and ensures everyone lacks education to make them easier to control while ensuring people will have to work in their unfair conditions by making any strikes or protest nearly impossible to do so, with the air being very polluted to the point of requiring an mask to breathe, being almost poor. He also lost both of his parents, losing his mother from overworking herself to death, and never receiving love from his father, who he possibly never even knew. He's also the only one of his guild left as everyone else has left due to their lives (with one member who got killed in real life).
- He cares for the NPCs as his friends and, in some cases, as his guild mate friend's children, with him having a fatherly relationship with Aura and Mare, and while he gets annoyed at him, he admits to seeing Pandora's Actor like a son.
- He has many Pet the Dog moments, as for example while he did protect Carne Village for pragmatic reasons, he has a small soft spot for Enri, Neifa and Nemu as he let them visit and have dinner in the Great Tomb of Narizark and Nemu's compliments of his achievements made him genuinely flattered, enough to put her on his "protect at all costs" list for Lupusregina Beta to protect at all costs, and he protected Tsudare in his name out of respect of her sister Ninya to replay his debt to her, thanking her for teaching him and knowing about the New World since she was killed by Clementine before he can do it.
- He can be genuinely polite at times as he got along with Zanac Valleon Igana Ryle Vaiself enough to see him honorable enough and would've spared the remaining of his kingdom had the nobles not killed Zanac to saves their own spines and angered Ainz for that act making them and their families sent to be tortured, due to his respect for Zanac.
- He can be honorable as he honored Gazef Stronoff's death and ensured he can't be revived to respect his wishes not being revived. He also keeps his word to people as "In the Ainz Ooal Gown" unless it's to very vile ones.
- He is an anti-villain as he can be a genuine noble leader, as he is a noble leader to the nation he made an orphanage for orphans, and refitted the adventurers guild to be actual explorers. He is also a well-intentioned extremist whose ultimate goal is to make a happy world.
- Ainz also has standards as while he had no feelings for humans (except for a few individuals), he has standards against racism towards them or his underlings eating them, as he didn't like Narberal Gamma and other NPCs hatred towards them since he wants to co-exist between humans by attempting them to see some good in them and forbid those who feed on humans such as Solution Epsilon and Ryraryus Spenia Ai Indarun from eating innocent humans, allowing them to only eat wicked ones who deserve it as a compromise. While he has no problem in harming and killing children as he has limits, he was disturbed by Buser wearing children's skulls like trophies (was blocked out by his emotion suppressing mechanism though so didn't feel it) and killed Buser since he knew Nigredo and Pestonya wouldn't like a sadistic child killer to work for Narizark. He was also disgusted and enraged about the Elf King Decem Hougan saying of having children to Aura (who is an minor by Dark Elf standards), meaning he is strongly against pedophilia.
- He is On & Off, doing some genuine heroic deeds both as Momon and himself (though some are pragmatic). Examples include saving Carne Village from the Sunset Scripture which allowed them to be in his debt and be genuine loyal followers, and the inhabitants of the Dark Elf Kingdom when its leader left them to be killed by its invaders.
- He can be merciful if his opponent surrenders when he is an good mood either sparing them or give them painless deaths at least. Though most were too arrogant at first due to them underestimating him at first but later smartens up when they see his power at display.
- While does regret making Albedo love him, he wouldn't have a problem with being with her if weren't for his emotional suppressing mechanism being a problem meaning he is capable of romance.
- He admits he can be an hypocrite at times.
- Due to his emotional suppressing mechanism that blocks out most of his emotions it hinders his ability to feel empathy as a result, meaning he suffers from minor moral agency issues, which makes his empathy get almost eroded during his battle with the Re-Estize Kingdom. Even Ainz himself admits it is an inconvenience as it blocks out stuff that would've normally disturbed him when he was originally an human.
- He has been incompetent at times due to not knowing how to run things; however, it is due to his lack of education since he didn't finish middle school, making it a minor prevention.
- Some of his acts were unintentionally heinous due to Demiurge, Albedo and other NPCs misinterpreting his intentions and being too paranoid to correct them, wanting to keep his image as the evil overlord they see him as, however, he later embraces it and goes along with them anyways, making it a minor prevention.
Trivia[]
- Ainz Ooal Gown is the only Overlord character to be Inconsistently Heinous so far.
- While Overlord is ongoing, it is very unlikely his status will be challenged even if he redeems himself since he committed too many heinous acts and is the main character making it impossible for him to fail to anyone else.
- His ISEKAI Quartet, Overlord: Mass for the Dead, and The Vampire Princess of the Lost Country versions can't qualify as Inconsistently Heinous as they are more heroic and less heinous who fail to other villains who did worse.
