Emmanuel, also known as the Abbot, is a major antagonist in Netflix's 2023 dark fantasy series, Castlevania Nocturne, a sequel/spin-off of Castlevania: the Animated Series, an adaptation of the video game franchise by Konami.
He is a corrupt priest, who desires to crush the French Revolution due to seeing the peasants harming God's will on earth and that the revolution would only bring more bloodshed. He makes a temporary alliance with Erzsebet Bathory and her cult due to sharing similar goals, he offers them the use of night creatures as an army to fight against the revolutionaries. He leads a sect from the Order of St. John and is Mizrak's superior. Later on, it is revealed that he is the father of Maria Renard and Tera's former lover.
Emmanuel was voiced by Richard Dormer in English and Akio Kato in Japanese.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He bargained his soul to Old Man Coyote to become a forgemaster out of fear over the Revolution.
- He willing worked with Erzsebet Bathory and her cult because they had similar goals of wanting to stop the peasants revolt while knowing her plan of blocking out the sun. For his alliance, Emmanuel offers to make night creatures for them.
- Emmanuel used his Hell machine to mass produce night creatures and tried to create a massive army of them with one of them being Edouard, Annette's friend and Jacques, a friend of Maria.
- Due to Edouard showing signs of agency, Emmanuel tries to assert to Edouard that he exist only to serve him and nothing else. He then had his night creatures imprison Edouard.
- Being turned into a night creature caused some personal pain between Edouard and Annette, with Annette wanting to put him out of his misery and Edouard trying to remember his past and being terrified of what he turned into.
- He send some of the night creatures he created to attack a group of revolutionaries in the town square.
- Emmanuel attempted to sacrifice his own daughter, Maria, to Erzsebet Bathory under the idea that her pure soul would enter heaven. This results in Maria being angry at her father, which encourages her in wanting to destroy the church. The situation got even worse when he confessed his love for Tera when Erzsebet aggressively asked him if he loves her. By admitting his love, Emmanuel, Richter, and Maria witness Tera in becoming a vampire.
- His actions had significant impact on Maria and Tera because not only Maria witnessed her mother becoming a vampire but became more bitter and angry as a person. Maria was so upset of the situation she came to blame Emmanuel for everything and expressed her rage through murder. For Tera, she struggles to control herself due to her vampirism and has become a much darker person in the process while being influence by Old Man Coyote, who has it's eyes on Maria.
- Under Erzsebet's orders, Emmanuel brought Drolta back to life by using the devil machine to bring her back as a night creature. This resurrection is proven to be terrifying as not only she can walk under the sun but she destroyed an entire revolutionary army so their corpses can be used to create more night creatures.
- The captain of the army was even terrified that her and the other soldiers are turned into monsters.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Emmanuel cares for a few people with it being his family, Mizrak, and his subordinates:
- He deeply loves his family, Tera and Maria. Years ago, he broke his vow of celibacy to have a child with Tera and keeping both of them as a secret from the church knowing how they will react especially that Tera and Maria are magic casters. Despite his actions, he never discards his strong love for them and is extremely upset how his actions affected them. During Maria's sacrifice, Emmanuel hesitates to do the deed while reciting the story of Abraham and asking Tera on where is the ram like in the biblical story, showing that Emmanuel wanting God to stop him what he was doing and asking for someone to take Maria's place. Emmanuel is even saddened for being responsible of Tera's transformation into a vampire and was upset when seeing her attempt to walk through the sun. Even when he continues to work with Bathory, his love for Maria never fades when he, albeit hypocritically, warns Tera not to harm their daughter and by doing so would render her sacrifice meaningless.
- He cares for his subordinates and his partner, Mizrak. He willingly buried their bodies and mourned their deaths while refusing to use their bodies to create more night creatures because he feels they deserve to rest in peace. Even when Erzsebet ask him to, he refuses. When visited by Mizrak, Emmanuel shows no grudges or resentment against his former comrade and doesn't sell him out to Erzsebet.
- Emmanuel is way too remorseful on his actions and how it harmed his family. He admits that he is going to hell for all he has done and his fear of damnation is treated with sympathy. However, he rejects redemption because he believes it's too late for him and can't take back for the things he has done.
- Emmanuel is too affable to anyone who isn't related to Erzsebet Bathory and her cult as he shown to be genuinely friendly and polite to others. Despite simple disagreements with the revolution and Maria's support for them, not once in the story he ever demeans her and Richter for being a part of the revolt but just wanted them to understand why he strongly oppose the revolution while expressing sadness that they won't change their minds. He even asked Maria to join him so he can protect her from any potential threat and admits to her that he protected her from the church despite knowing she is magic caster.
- He has a sense of honor towards Edouard where he allows him to roam around freely after keeping him in the cage for so long. It should be noted that he was well aware of Edouard not following his orders and granting him free reign is a heavy risk to his mission.
- No matter how hypocritical he was as a person and bringing his own downfall, Emmanuel's death is portrayed as a deep tragedy because not only did Maria killed him in cold blood but his death is extremely pitiful. Emmanuel is horrified by the dark powers that Maria was unleashing while deeply crying that his daughter is going to kill him. He kneels on the floor while praying to God and gets burned to death by Maria. The scene illustrates Maria's murder on her father as completely unjustified, which would affect her later on when she realizes that his death brought no satisfaction and express regret on killing him. She even described what she did as murder.
