A long time ago. A very long time ago. The man made an ultimate weapon. Using it required the life force of many Pokémon… The Pokémon granted eternal life learned this. The resurrected eternal Pokémon left the man's side. The man was surprised and sad. He had revived it so they could be together… day after day passed, but they were never to meet. Eventually, he became a mere shell of a man. A man condemned to wander forever by the light of the weapon… and a Pokémon that also wanders eternally… where is it now? What do I have to do to meet it?
~ AZ describing himself and his relation with his Floette after firing the Ultimate Weapon.
Floette… it's been 3,000 years…
~ AZ when he's finally reunited with his Floette.

AZ is the overarching antagonist of the 2013 video game Pokémon X and Y and the supporting character in the 2025 video game Pokémon Legends: Z-A. He is the former King of Kalos who brought an end to the ongoing war thousands of years ago ever since he lost his Floette. He played an important role as his actions left a big impact on the events of the series.

Biography[]

This section is too long. Visit here for more details: AZ's Synopsis on the Villains Wiki.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He created a machine by having the life energy of countless people and Pokémon drained from them, presumably killing them in the process, through the harnessed powers of either Xerneas or Yveltal in order to revive his Floette.
  • He converted his machine into the destructive and powerful Ultimate Weapon as a means to end the war that got his Floette killed through a single blast. However, while the blast's impact killed the soldiers and their Pokémon in battle, it also presumably almost wiped out the entire region of Kalos, potentially killing millions of innocent people and Pokémon not involved with the war.
    • This act was so horrible that it was the reason his Floette left him thousands of years later.
    • The spirits of the Pokémon victims are seen at the end of the flashback as their spirits turned into rock structures seen within Geosenge Town.
  • Because of using the Ultimate Weapon, he is indirectly responsible for the temporary deaths of either Xerneas or Yveltal as their life energy was drained in the process of the machine and both reverted into a cocoon state for years.
  • Despite having to compete with Volo who tried to destroy the universe with similar resources. AZ still stands out due to having the highest kill count in the mainline series.
  • Overall, his actions left a huge impact as he is responsible for all the events that happened in Pokémon X and Y, such as being the one who is indirectly responsible for the creation of Mega Evolution.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is tragic and is played for sympathy. He lost his Floette when it was forced to participate in the ongoing war before it died several years later, this was the reason for his motivations and it is really understandable since he's gone through a terrible experience of losing the very Pokémon he loved. Even when he revived it successfully, he never forgave the people who started the war and it gave him a reason to end it all as a means to avenge his Floette.
  • He truly loved and cared for his Floette since it was a gift from his late mother. When it died in battle, he was devastated and heartbroken to the point he wanted to revive it in order to be with his Pokémon. When it left him, he was truly broken and he spent years trying to search for it, once he later redeems himself and reunites with his Floette, he cried tears of joy.
  • He was an extremist to the least. Although it was to avenge his Floette, he did genuinely want to stop the war since he couldn't forgive the meaninglessness and suffering it brought to people presumably, especially AZ himself.
  • He shows remorse for all of his horrible actions, especially all the lives he drained as a sacrifice to revive his Floette when he finally realized this when his Floette left him.
  • He is genuinely affable as he thanked the protagonist for stopping the Ultimate Weapon in time and kindly challenges him/her to know the heart of a Pokémon Trainer.
  • He is anti-villainous, ever since he realized his actions, he held the key to his machine as a means to prevent anyone from ever using the Ultimate Weapon and ensure no one made the same mistakes as he did.
  • He ultimately redeems himself in the end when he finally lets go of his painful past and he tearfully reunites with his Floette after so many years.

Trivia[]

  • AZ, alongside the anime version of Mewtwo and the video game version of Lysandre, are the only three official Pokémon characters to be Inconsistently Heinous.
  • It is unknown if his Generations counterpart could count as an Inconsistently Heinous.
  • He is one of three mainline Pokémon Inconsistently Heinous villains, others being Zinnia and Lysandre.
    • Interestingly, all three of them were introduced in the 6th generation.
