Captain McCrea: Wait a minute... Computer when was that message sent out to the axiom?

Axiom Computer: Message received in the year 2110. Captain McCrea: That's eh... That's nearly 700 years ago! AUTO things have changed! We've gotta go back!
AUTO: Sir, orders are "Do not return to earth".
Captain McCrea: But life is sustainable now! Look at this plant! Green and growing! It's living proof he was wrong!
AUTO: Irrelevant Captain.
Captain McCrea: WHAT?! IT’S COMPLETELY RELEVENT! Out there is our home! HOME, AUTO. And it’s in trouble! I can’t just sit here and do nothing! That’s all I’ve ever done! That’s all anyone on this blasted ship has ever done! NOTHING!
AUTO: On the Axiom you will survive.
Captain McCrea: I DON'T WANT TO SURVIVE! I WANNA LIVE!
AUTO: Must follow my directive.

~ AUTO trying to convince Captain McCrea that earth is beyond saving and that humanity will survive on the Axiom despite the evidence that earth is still inhabitable.

Give me the plant!
~ AUTO's most famous quote.
ENOUGH!
~ AUTO's villainous breakdown as he tilts the axiom onto it's side to stop WALL•E and EVE from putting the plant in the Holo Detector

AUTOPILOT, better known simply as AUTO, is the main antagonist of Pixar's 9th feature-length film WALL•E and its midquel short film BURN•E.

It is an AI created by Buy n Large as the autopilot for the Axiom, while being given the secret goal by the former chief executive Shelby Forthright to prevent humanity from ever returning to Earth.

It was voiced by the text-to-speech software MacInTalk.

Its Evil Ranking[]

What Makes It Heinous?[]

  • When EVE came back positive, it had GO-4 eject the plant into space in an attempt to jeopardize humanity's single chance of returning to Earth.
  • When Captain McCrea decided the Axiom needed to return to Earth, it tried to convince him otherwise, and tried to grab the plant by force when they failed to convince him.
  • When WALL-E obtained the plant and refused to give it to him, it brutally tased them, which fried his circuit board and caused him to fall down the trash chute, before having EVE dropped into the trash chute, leaving her, WALL-E, and the plant to be dumped into space.
  • It performed a mutiny on Captain McCrea by taking control of the entire Axiom and trapping the Captain in his quarters.
  • After it found out that WALL-E and EVE had escaped the trash, it sent out a batch of SECUR-T Robots to stop them.
  • When the Captain fooled it into thinking he had the plant, they came down to take it, before fighting him to prevent him from activating the Holo Detector and then fighting him to shut down the Holo Detector when the Captain activated it.
  • After seeing WALL-E and EVE trying to put the plant into the Holo Detector, it proceeded to topple the Axiom over, endangering the lives of everyone aboard, which it was aware of as it was staring directly at the passengers.
    • This even endangered BURN-E.
  • When it saw WALL-E trying to hold up the Holo Detector, it pressed the detract button again only for WALL-E to continue holding it up, leading to them jabbing their taser into the detract button, forcing the Holo Detector to descend and effectively crush WALL-E to death.
    • While WALL-E's death wasn't permanent, the damage he got from being crushed meant that he needed to have almost all of his body parts replaced, effectively causing his AI to reset, meaning that AUTO almost wiped the robot of all his sentience.
  • When Captain McCrea rebelled against them, it got out its taser to incapacitate him before finally being deactivated and putting an end to his terror once and for all.

What Makes It Inconsistent?[]

  • It is a villain by proxy as the only reason it performs its heinous acts is out of a directive it was given to never return to Earth for humanity's safety.
  • It has severe moral agency issues, due to it being a robot that was given the directive of not returning to Earth, with there being no evidence of it being able to rebel against their programming. This is evident by the fact that it obeyed McCrea when he ordered it to show him why he was taking away the plant.
  • It is an anti-villain and a well-intentioned extremist, as it genuinely believes that Earth is beyond saving, and wants everyone to remain on the Axiom in order to survive.

Trivia[]

  • AUTO was originally considered a Villainous Benchmark, as it was thought that its actions were bog-standard and that its worst act of mass endangerment relied on Fridge Horror, as it was thought that it may not have known of the damage it caused. However, once it was pointed out that it would've known of the danger it caused and that WALL-E's murder was brutal, it was subsequently proposed and approved for Inconsistently Heinous instead.
  • He's one of the two characters from WALL•E to be Inconsistently Heinous, with the other being GO-4's videogame counterpart.
